What would you call progressive farming?

Farmers that are consistently looking to avoid/escape commodity trap are progressive farmers. They achieve this by deploying their resources to produce and sell differentiated/niche products to yield them consistently better profits are progressive farmers.

While technology and/or R & D does play a role in most progressive farming activities in my view it is not a necessary conditions. Farmers could be producing same products (as the competition) but could achieve arbitrage opportunities through one or several of these combination possibilities:

  1. Differentiated distribution partnerships
  2. Different market choices
  3. Figuring out a way to sell their produce in lean production seasons

Almost always progressive product innovations are an result of the above mentioned differentiated choices
